Indigenous communities remain cautious as lockdown restrictions ease – Fort McMurray Today

First Nations communities in the Wood Buffalo area are remaining cautious as Alberta eases its social distancing restrictions and public health orders.

When most of Alberta’s businesses began opening its doors to the public last Thursday, the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation (CPFN) reported its first case of COVID-19. For the community located 125 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, it was a reminder the crisis is not over.

“A lot of our members have not only been compliant with social distancing but are actually very supportive,” says Matthew Michetti, assistant to the chief of CPFN.

“We have our fingers crossed with the rest of the country that things will continue to get better, but this easing is taken with a wait-and-see sort of attitude.”
