I can’t sleep in the darkness’: Witnesses testified about intergenerational trauma in final days of Inquiry respecting the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System – Saltwire

Five witnesses testified over the week-long inquiry

Jack Penashue knows all too well about PTSD.

Penashue says he was molested and sexually abused by a priest at a young age.

Details about the abuse are covered under a publication ban, but Penashue says he knows about the lifelong trauma that follows.

“I can’t sleep in the darkness, and I’m going to be 57 years old. Those are the kind of things that are still alive, and still there. And I’ll probably live with that for the rest of my life,” says Penashue.

He was among several witnesses to testify at last week’s hearings into the Inquiry respecting the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System, which ended its latest sessions on Friday, Jan. 26.
