Lyndon George said the local Indigenous community could feel the loss of Heather Winterstein after she passed away.

The 24-year-old Anishinaabe woman died in December while waiting for care at the St. Catharines Niagara Health site.

“Heather had gifts that she brought into the Indigenous circle that no other person has,” said George, the Indigenous justice co-ordinator at the Hamilton and Niagara Community Legal Clinics. “As Indigenous people, we believe that each of us have gifts and have a unique perspective. Heather had those gifts and had a perspective. With her death, we no longer have those gifts. So as a community, we mourn together.”
