Holiday incentive aims to recruit nurses to Nunavut

Press Release

14 October 2022

The Department of Health is offering an incentive to nurses wanting to work in Nunavut this holiday season. ‘Bring a Friend or Family Member’ is a program developed to improve recruitment to avoid projected staff shortages and possible service reductions.

The Government of Nunavut (GN) provides an excellent opportunity for Canadian health professionals to join a dynamic and exciting work environment that allows for a range of professional and personal development with great wages.

The ‘Bring a Friend or Family Member’ incentive provides nurses with one return flight for a friend or family member to accompany the nurse to the community. The friend or family member must not be a resident of the community where the nurse is scheduled to work. The nurse and the companion will share accommodations. Staff are advised to speak to their recruiter as the airfare may be a taxable benefit.

The program is available to:

  • Indeterminate and casual Group 5 nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and mental health consultants.
  • Indeterminate staff working Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
  • Casual staff who provide a minimum of three weeks of service and are scheduled to work from December 6, 2022, to January 9, 2023.

The GN strives to be an employer of choice and continues to implement A Roadmap to Strengthen the Nunavut Nursing Workforce, the comprehensive recruitment and retention strategy to make Nunavut more attractive to nurses.

Working in Nunavut allows nurses the flexibility to practice to the full extent of their scope and pursue more advancement opportunities.

Licensing expenses to work in Nunavut are covered by the Department of Health. Apply today to begin this exciting new process.
