Heiltsuk Tribal Council – COVID-19: Council Update on Emergency Operations & Closures

Press Release

To our Heiltsuk Community,

We are writing to inform you that we have struck an intergovernmental working group that will be meeting daily and providing updates to our community on efforts to protect the community from COVID-19. Many of our entities have been closed to the public to ensure the health of those visiting, and our workers. We are taking these measures to keep our governance systems functioning.

The following are closed to the public (some are operating under essential services only):

  • Heiltsuk Administration Office
  • Social Development
  • Kaxla
  • Youth Center
  • Community Hall
  • Day Care

The capital department will be working outdoors only, and responding to houses only in emergency situations.

Additional measures taken by HTC to practice social distancing and curb the potential spread of COVID-19 include:

  • No employee or council travel
  • Meetings are being held by video or teleconferencing
  • Working from home

Bella Bella has a local Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) that is supported by a very robust structure. All of the work we are doing is in step with our regional and provincial partners. We have information for members on who will be tested and how to self-isolate if you are required to. Only people who travelled from out of the country are required to self-isolate.

We are working with all other entities in community to ensure that we have open and clear communications to community on what is happening and how we are responding. We want to always convey accurate and up to date information to our members. We will be launching a Facebook page that will be updated daily in the afternoon after our three o’clock meetings. The interagency group consists of: Heiltsuk Tribal Council, Heiltsuk Heath Centre, Kaxla, RW Large Hospital, Restorative Justice, Social Development, RCMP, and BC Ambulance Services.

If you are coming to home to Bella Bella we ask that you practice social distancing. We recognize that this is a sensitive issue and there are many factors to consider. This is a stressful and scary time and we urge everyone to work together and show kindness to one another. There is no right answer in this situation so we have to support one another.

Please look out for the Facebook page and additional posts on this website.
