Health Canada has approved use of the brand Neffy, the first needle-free treatment for some allergic reactions — such as insect stings or bites, foods, and medicinal products.
According to ALK-Abello Pharmaceuticals Inc. Canada (ALK Canada), Neffy is a pocket-sized nasal spray that can be used to treat anaphylaxis in case of an emergency.
“This approval addresses a critical need for Canadians affected by severe allergies that put them at risk of anaphylaxis,” reads a release from ALK Canada, adding an estimated 2.5 million Canadians have severe allergies.
“Research shows that half of those living with a life-threatening allergy do not consistently carry their prescribed epinephrine auto-injector and approximately half do not administer an auto-injector device when needed in an emergency,” the release also states.
The spray has a 30-month shelf life and does not need to be specially stored, ALK Canada says.
The spray is set to be available in pharmacies nationwide this summer, according to ALK Canada.
