“He could have a tremendous impact”: indigenous physicist recruited by Perimeter Institute – Starphoenix

Percy Paul hacks away at a laptop computer in downtown apartment, a masters degree in physics duct-taped to the wall.

He is completely immersed in quantum mechanics and black holes. Hours, even days, can pass without Paul realizing the need to cook, wash his clothes, talk to other human beings or even get some fresh air.

“A lot of people think they know what space or time are, but they don’t,” he says with a laugh. “That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”

Paul arrived this week at the prestigious Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, where he’s expected to collaborate with some of the world’s most accomplished scientists. It’s a long way from his modest but comfortable apartment, and a world away from his childhood home on the English River First Nation in northwest Saskatchewan.
