Hay River gets a doctor

Yellowknife (March 13, 2013) – Hay River will be getting a doctor next month when Dr. Coralie Boudreau begins a three-year contract on April 2, 2013.

“It was through the hard work of the recruitment team at the Hay River Health and Social Services Authority and the Departments of Health and Social Services that we were able to get a doctor for Hay River and the surrounding communities,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Tom Beaulieu. “We are committed to recruiting doctors to NWT communities, but we need to make sure that we use them more effectively as a territorial resource.”

The Department of Health and Social services is actively looking to recruit permanent doctors to practice in communities outside of Yellowknife and continues to work on developing new methods of recruitment and retention in partnership with doctors themselves.

The Department is also working on innovative solutions for using doctors in the NWT health system to address the ongoing challenge of finding doctors to practice in rural and remote settings. Using e-health technology to create virtual teams that expand the reach of specialists and family practitioners is one way the department is ensuring that all residents of the NWT have access to physicians. Solutions like this allow nurses to provide care to residents in their own communities while consulting doctors online to make better treatment decisions.
