The Kawartha Truth and Reconciliation Support Group has partnered with GreenUP for a fall coat drive aimed at gathering winter clothes for First Nations in Northern Ontario.
The drive was launched last year when Sandra Mckay of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation, a fly-in community, asked KTRSG member Laurie Siblock to consider organizing a coat drive.
Children and adults in the community were in need of winter clothes, Mckay told the group. People in the communities, located about 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, face extreme weather conditions in the winter with little access to adequate winter clothing because of transportation costs and distance.
Siblock, who had visited the community in 2014, got to work and the group collected more than 250 coats, snowsuits, pairs of boots and other winterwear. The campaign ran out of her home, but this year GreenUP has offered its space for collecting, sorting and packaging.
