Grand Chief provides Statement to Support Clean Drinking Water Motion

Grand Chief Denise Stonefish issued the following statement in response to the Liberal motion introduced yesterday to Parliament:

“AIAI is pleased that the struggles of First Nations to access safe drinking water is becoming better understood by Parliamentarians. Our struggles range from basic access to running water in the family home, to inadequate water and waste water infrastructure on reserve. To begin addressing this range of needs, the Government of Canada must provide consistent and effective funding to First Nations. Further, each First Nations must be regarded as a partner in identifying its own needs and solutions.”The Liberal motion introduced to Parliament is as follows:

Mr. Rae (Toronto Centre) — That the House call on the Government of Canada to address on an urgent basis the needs of those First Nations communities whose members have no access to clean, running water in their homes; that action to address this disparity begin forthwith; and that the House further recognize that the absence of this basic requirement represents a continuing affront to our sense of justice and fairness as Canadians.
