Government of Yukon advancing plans for 407 Alexander Street site

Press Release

August 5, 2025

The structure at 407 Alexander Street will be removed and options for the site’s future use will be contemplated through the Whitehorse Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan.

The Whitehorse Community Safety and Wellbeing planning process was launched in February 2025 to help address community safety challenges in Whitehorse using a trauma-informed and evidence-based approach, including consideration of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design. This planning process will allow the Government of Yukon, in partnership with the City of Whitehorse, partner agencies, Yukon First Nations, the RCMP, community partners and residents, to explore future uses of the site to ensure they reflect community needs and support safety, livability and wellbeing in the downtown core.

This work supports the 2022 Auditor General’s recommendations and aligns with the Downtown Whitehorse Safety Response Action Plan by improving the area and better responding to urgent needs. It also reflects the Government of Yukon’s commitment under Creating Home, the territory’s housing strategy, to meet ongoing and emerging needs and strengthen coordination with partners.

Quick facts

  • The Government of Yukon purchased 407 Alexander Street on March 31, 2025.
  • Initial planning considered using the existing structure for programming. The standard post-purchase building assessment deemed the structure unsuitable for use.
  • Removing the structure avoids costly renovations for temporary use and allows site preparation to begin.
  • The property will be secured during and after demolition with fencing to prevent unauthorized access and help keep the area safe until a longer-term use is implemented.
