Press Release
July 22, 2025
The Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health is pleased to announce today’s launch of the Colorectal Cancer Screening Program in Iqaluit.
If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, and do not have symptoms of colorectal cancer, you are eligible to take home a FIT kit (Fecal Immunochemical Test). This is a simple stool test that can help detect early signs of colorectal cancer; when the cancer is easier to treat.
The FIT kit is easy to use and comes with clear instructions in Inuktitut, English and French. It only takes a few minutes to complete in the comfort of your home.
Colorectal cancer is one of the leading cancers in Nunavut, but it is preventable and treatable when caught early. Regular screening is the most effective way to prevent deaths from colorectal cancer.
Pick up your FIT kit today at the Qikiqtani General Hospital (QGH) clinic in Iqaluit.
FIT testing is recommended every two years for individuals aged 50-74 at average risk. Eligible residents in Iqaluit can pick up a free FIT kit at the QGH clinic.
For more information, speak with your healthcare provider. You can also contact the Cancer Screening Program by calling 867-975-5943 or emailing CancerScreening@gov.nu.ca. Additional information is available on the Government of Nunavut’s Cancer Screening webpage.
Let’s work together to raise awareness and prevent colorectal cancer in our communities. Early detection can save lives.
