Government of Canada supports Project to Address Violence Against Aboriginal Women and its Effects on Children

SAULT STE MARIE, ON, May 30 – The federal government is pleased to provide support to the Waabinong Head Start Family Resource Centre to carry out a project designed to address both the issue of violence against Aboriginal women and the negative effects on children of witnessing this violence.The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today announced that the Waabinong Head Start Family Resource Centre is receiving $75,482 for its project, MINO’AANGOODIWI-NOOJIMOWIN TEMEGAK.

“Our Government is taking action to end violence against Aboriginal women and in so doing, to improve the quality of life in Aboriginal communities,” said Minister Guergis. “I am proud today to announce funding to a promising new project in Sault Ste Marie that goes to the heart of the issue.”

Participant families will be provided with cultural teachings on healthy relationships, respect and traditional gender roles. Educators and community members will participate in workshops on domestic violence, its effects and the social and emotional costs of such violence on the community and on the culture of Aboriginal peoples.

Funding for the MINO’AANGOODIWI-NOOJIMOWIN TEMEGAK project comes from the Women’s Community Fund of the Women’s Program of Status of Women Canada.
