February 08, 2010

The Government of the Northwest Territories is encouraging all NWT residents to recognize Mental Wellness Week this February 7th to 13th by making healthy choices. Traditionally called Mental Health Week, the name change by the NWT branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) emphasizes how individuals can focus on making choices that promote mental wellness, such as regular exercise and relaxation.“One of the priorities of the Foundation for Change Action Plan is to promote healthy living and wellness,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Sandy Lee. “We want to focus on wellness and how people can take address their own health and social needs by making healthy choices.”

Currently, the Department of Health and Social Services is supporting new, community-based initiatives in the Beaufort-Delta region to address mental health and addictions issues. The Department also supports ongoing suicide prevention initiatives such as the NWT Helpline and youth resiliency projects across the territory.
