GNWT and partners meet to advance First Nation, Inuit and Métis cancer control

Yellowknife (March 1, 2013) – Representatives from the Department of Health and Social Services together with invited community guests and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer will meet on March 4, 2013 in Yellowknife to discuss how they can work together to reduce the impact of cancer on First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Attendees at the meeting will explore possible synergies and opportunities to work together based on cancer control priorities in the NWT and the Partnership’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis Action Plan on Cancer Control.

“I am pleased that the Partnership is coming to the NWT to share their plan and explore ways we can partner with them to reduce the impact of cancer on our people,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Tom Beaulieu. “We are working hard to educate our residents about cancer and prevention. I look forward to results and feedback from our stakeholders”.

“Advancing cancer control with and for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities is a priority for the Partnership,” said Lee Fairclough, Vice-President at the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, who is attending the meeting with Partnership Board member Dr. Evan Adams of the Sliammon First Nation (Powell River, BC). “We are looking forward to meeting with a diverse group to explore how we might work together to drive meaningful improvements in health outcomes among these communities.”
