GNT: Daily Update – September 23, 2021

YELLOWKNIFE September 23, 2021 – The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) will no longer be reporting deaths or resolved cases by community in its daily updates to protect the privacy of individuals in our communities. The total number of deaths territory-wide will continue to be reported. For more information please see Privacy in a Pandemic.

Today, the OCPHO is announcing 30 new cases of COVID-19 in the NWT since September 22. The total number of recent cases has increased to 760. There are 252 active cases among residents in the territory plus three active out-of-territory cases. Of the remaining 505 cases, 494 NWT residents and nine out-of-territory cases have recovered and there have been two deaths.

  • The total number of COVID-19 deaths in the NWT is 2.
  • Cumulative ICU admissions is 12.
  • The cumulative number of hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic is 30, of which 26 are associated with the current territorial COVID-19 Delta variant outbreak.
  • 73% of the total hospitalized cases were non-fully vaccinated.

Public Health Orders

Yesterday (September 22, 2021) – The OCPHO announced extensions to three temporary Public Health Orders and the introduction of stronger gathering restrictions in Yellowknife, Dettah, and Ndilǫ. Behchokǫ̀ Temporary COVID-19 Restrictions Health Order

The OCPHO has extended the temporary COVID-19 restrictions order for the community of Behchokǫ̀. All indoor and outdoor gatherings are restricted, non-essential workers must work from home, schools remain closed, and learning is moved online among other restrictions. This extended order is in effect until 11:59PM on October 7th, 2021.

Whatı̀ Temporary COVID-19 Restrictions Public Health Order

The OCPHO has extended the temporary COVID-19 restrictions order for the community of Whatı̀. All indoor and outdoor gatherings are restricted, non-essential workers must work from home, school remains closed, and learning is moved online among other restrictions.  This extended order is in effect until 11:59PM on October 9th, 2021.

COVID-19 Gatherings Order – Yellowknife, Ndilǫ and Dettah

The CPHO has extended and implemented additional restrictions for Yellowknife, Ndilǫ and Dettah. The 10-day extension of the COVID-19 Gatherings Order for Yellowknife, Dettah, and Ndilǫ will take effect on Sept. 24 at 11:59 pm and be in effect until October 4th at 11:59 pm.

It includes the following:

  • Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 25 people.
  • Indoor gatherings are limited to 10 people. Most businesses may have up to 10 members of the public inside on each floor of their premises in addition to staff. The number of staff is limited to the minimum number required to perform operations. The 10 person limit will not apply to essential businesses and facilities, provided they limit the number of in-person staff to those required to carry out operations.
  • All previous exemptions for persons, businesses, organizations, restaurants or bars will no longer apply. Further exemptions during this 10 -day order will only be provided in exceptional circumstances to further limit the spread within Yellowknife.
  • Household gatherings will continue to be limited to five visitors at one time to a maximum of a total of 10 people.
  • Schools, colleges, and trade schools will remain closed until the expiry of the order.
  • Day cares and day homes are exempt from this order under currently approved plans that have been submitted to the OCPHO.
