YELLOWKNIFE October 6, 2021 – The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) will not be extending the Temporary COVID-19 Restrictions order in Whatì when it expires at 11:59PM on October 9, 2021. The collective efforts of the community, and leadership, to support one another during these challenging times should be celebrated. Residents that are required to isolate beyond October 9, 2021 must complete their isolation period.
The OCPHO would also like to congratulate the following communities for responding to the Drive to 75 (and Beyond) campaign. An additional six communities have reached a vaccination rate of greater than 75% in all residents aged 12 and older. Thank you for doing your part to help protect yourself from severe outcomes from COVID-19. Getting the vaccine helps protect not only yourself but also your friends, family members and community.

The OCPHO is announcing 55 new cases of COVID-19 in the NWT since October 5. The total number of recent cases, since mid-August, has increased to 1245. There are 418 active cases among residents in the NWT plus four (4) active out-of-territory cases. Of the remaining cases, 802 NWT residents and 15 out-of-territory cases have recovered, and there have been six deaths.
The OCPHO is working to provide the best information and data possible. Occasionally cases, previously considered confirmed, will be removed if additional testing determines they do not have COVID-19.

- The cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths in the NWT is six.
- The cumulative number of hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic is 42, of which 38 are associated with the current territorial COVID-19 Delta variant outbreak.
- 67% of the total hospitalized cases were not fully vaccinated.
- Cumulative ICU admissions are 14.

The OCPHO is attempting to provide exposure notifications wherever possible with the human resources available. Community spread occurring in Behchokǫ̀ and Yellowknife makes this a challenging task. Residents in these communities should keep in mind that any public place could result in exposure to COVID-19.

The OCPHO is extending the Public Health Order – COVID-19 Gathering Order – Yellowknife, Ndilǫ and Dettah (effective September 29, 2021). This amended order will come into effect at 11:59PM tonight, October 6, 2021 and will be extended to 11:59PM on October 17, 2021.
The order contains the following restrictions:
- Outdoor gatherings limited to 25 people.
- Indoor gatherings and business are limited to 10 people indoors. Exceptions are provided for essential businesses and facilities. For more information please see the Containment Gathering Order FAQ.
- Schools, colleges and trade schools are required to remain closed to in person learning for the duration of the order.
- Households are not permitted to host visitors indoors.
- Only the members within their household are allowed to gather indoors with the following exceptions:
- Single member households can bubble with one additional household;
- Caregiver providing care to an individual (for example: check-ins on elderly, individuals with disabilities, etc.);
- Regularly scheduled childcare arrangements and respite needs;
- Persons responding to emergencies, including but not limited to medical emergencies, police emergencies and urgent home repairs (for example: flooding, electrical work, fire, etc.)
- Previously approved family reunification
