Press Release
YELLOWKNIFE October 4, 2021 – The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) introduced new travel restrictions for Behchokǫ̀ in an updated Public Health Order released earlier this afternoon. The restrictions went into place at 5:00PM today and are in effect until 11:59PM on October 18, 2021. Visit our website to review details of the order.
The current outbreak situation northerners are collectively facing is serious; capacity throughout our health care system is not unlimited. The outbreak is disrupting our way of life. The public health orders intend to lower the risk of further transmission throughout Yellowknife and all NWT communities because we are so closely connected. These measures are difficult but we know they work. They will work in Yellowknife and the surrounding communities if we all work together and do our part to stay home, isolate and arrange testing if we are feeling sick, keep our symptomatic children home from day cares and day homes, and follow the advice and recommendations of the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO). This Thanksgiving season choose to celebrate safely by visiting with your friends, family and neighbours outdoors, virtually and over the phone.
The OCPHO is announcing 86 new cases of COVID-19 in the NWT since October 1. The total number of recent cases, since mid-August, has increased to 1125. There are 334 active cases among residents in the NWT plus six (6) active out-of-territory cases. Of the remaining cases, 766 NWT residents and 13 out-of-territory cases have recovered, and there have been six deaths.
