Alberta pledges over $20 million for wellness programs in schools and communities

Edmonton… The Action on Wellness Forum wrapped up Dec. 3 with significant pledges to wellness made by many of the over 250 delegates. Pledges made at the Forum focus on improved workplace wellness strategies, better collaboration between industries and more investment from the private sector.“The intent of the Forum was to get commitments to wellness where Albertans live, learn, work and play, and we have achieved that today,” said Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Health and Wellness. “I am pleased with what we were able to accomplish in such a short time.”
Delegates who attended the Dec. 1-3 Forum represented many of Alberta’s major employers, industries, communities, educational organizations, and governments.

Government also committed to $20 million in renewed funding for wellness activities including: $19.2 for mental health projects in schools (announced earlier today); and over $1 million for programs that promote healthy eating and active living in schools and communities.

“In order to enjoy a good quality of life, you must be healthy. Helping Albertans to be healthy and stay healthy is a main priority in the 5-Year Health Action Plan,” said Zwozdesky. “When you see and hear the staggering statistics on mental health issues, inactivity, and obesity, and the related chronic diseases, you can see that it is time for further action.”

Becoming the Best: Alberta’s 5-Year Health Action Plan, was announced on Nov. 30, and provides Albertans with clear direction on what they can expect from their health care system over the next 5 years.
