FNIGC to release first trend results from the third phase of its landmark First Nations Regional Health Survey in Ottawa, March 14

March 8, 2018

The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) will present the first results—including the first-ever trends over time—from its foundational survey process, the First Nations Regional Health Survey (RHS) Phase 3, on March 14, 2018.

The results will be published in The National Report of The First Nations Regional Health Survey Phase 3: Volume 1, which will be released on Day Two of FNIGC’s RHS Data Release Conference in downtown Ottawa, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the landmark First Nations on-reserve survey.

The landmark report will include data and selected trends on a wide range of health and well-being indicators related to First Nations people living in reserve and northern communities across Canada, including: chronic health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis), education, employment, income, housing conditions, smoking, alcohol and drug use, safe drinking water and internet access.

The RHS data release conference, “20 Years of First Nations Data: The Path to RHS Phase 3”, is taking place on March 13 & 14, 2018, and will be hosted by Olympic athlete and Pan-Am Games Gold Medalist Waneek Horn-Miller. FNIGC’s Executive Director, Dr. Jonathan Dewar, will also be on hand as will the RHS Phase 3 National Report authors.

Date: Wednesday, March 14
Time: 9 a.m.
Location: Delta Ottawa City Centre Hotel, Grand Salon, 101 Lyon St. North

The RHS was the first—and is still the only—national health survey created, conducted and carried out by First Nations people for First Nations people. Launched in 1997, the RHS is rooted in Traditional and Western understandings of health and well-being and gathers information in First Nations reserve and northern communities across Canada.
