We have an international speaker, Dr. Beverley Lawton, ONZM, MD, Director of the Women’s Health Research Centre of the Department of Primary Health Care & General Practice at the University of Otago in Wellington South, New Zealand, Simon Brascoupé, CFNHM, Institute for Aboriginal Peoples’ Health, Canadian Institute of Health Research and George Wurtak, Manager of Programs at the International Centre for Infectious Diseases and Co-Chair of the International Indigenous HPV Alliance at the Supporting Infectious Disease Control in Indigenous Communities workshop.

HPV plays a major role in cancers of both men and women, causing most cervical cancers, many head and neck, penile, anal, vulvar, and other cancers as well as anogenital warts. Indigenous peoples around the world suffer the greatest consequences of HPV disease.  Compared to Canada’s general population, cervical cancer incidence is up to six times higher in First Nations (FN) women and a 50% increase in mortality of FN women has been observed in some areas in Canada.  The International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID) is a leader in planning HPV prevention and control for Indigenous populations both across Canada and internationally. This workshop will discuss several infectious disease-related issues experienced by some Indigenous communities in Canada and in New Zealand.  Examples of best practices to prevent and control HPV disease will be shared in an interactive manner involving real-world situations, including PowerPoint presentations, discussion, and a question & answer session.  The successful New Zealand Maori approach to health governance will also be discussed.  A document containing example scenarios of patients dealing with HPV test results will be shared. Suggestions on ways to manage with those situations will be provided.  Participants will be welcomed to share their experiences and their approaches in dealing with past clinical situations.

The workshop also will include information on activities and resources of:

• International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID);
• The International Indigenous HPV Alliance;
• National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) publications; and
• New Zealand Maori Health.

First Nations communities have expressed a desire for information on Tuberculosis (TB), HIV/AIDS, HPV and other STIs, Influenza and Pneumonia, immunization, and emergency preparedness.  Workshop participants will be provided with resources and references for some of these areas.  A final discussion will address the opportunity to develop medium-term strategies between ICID and members of the First Nations Health Managers Association and First Nations communities and organizations across Canada.
