Fisher River Cree Nation presents: Developing an Illegal Drug Strategy for your Community Conference

Tuesday May 13, 2008 at the Victoria Inn – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Substance abuse is a prevailing epidemic that is affecting individuals, families and communities on our First Nations across Canada. The devastating affects of substance abuse not only destroys the lives of individuals, but also negatively influences their families and the overall wellness and health of their community. In 2004, Fisher River Cree Nation took a leading step towards fighting the presence of drugs in the community by implementing an innovative strategy that includes a By-Law addressing the drug usage, selling and possession in the community, and ensuing Employee Policy requiring any band employee or contractor to be drug free. An evaluation of this strategy took place in 2006 with funding for research provided by the University of Manitoba’s ACADRE program. We, as a pro-active First Nation community, would like to now share this very pertinent information with other communities interested in developing and implementing an illegal strategy for their community. This conference is aimed at discussing the evaluation findings and providing a tool to those communities to start their own strategy.
