Enhancing Health Research for Aging Ontarians
New Ontario Government Supports Chronic Disease Research in the North

The new Ontario government is supporting innovative research for seniors at Health Sciences North in Sudbury.
With support from the province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Advanced Medical Institute of Canada (AMRIC) at Health Sciences North is establishing a Geriatrics Research Chair who will study ways to prevent and reduce chronic disease affecting seniors in northern and Aboriginal communities. The project will identify ways to support the development of vaccines that will improve health outcomes.
This project, expected to create 10 jobs, is led by Dr. Janet McElhaney, a world-renowned seniors care physician.
Investing in research is an important part of the Ontario government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will help create a fair society and give the people of Ontario more opportunities for jobs and economic prosperity.
- Health Sciences North offers training opportunities to postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and summer students. It also works closely with Laurentian University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
- Ontario is supporting this project through the NOHFC’s Emerging Technology Program.
