Ontario’s Environment Ministry is considering several projects in Sarnia-Lambton related to air pollution and people’s health.

“We recognize there are a number of questions and concerns related to air pollutants in the Sarnia area,” said spokesperson Gary Wheeler, in an email.

“A mix of projects, including a study, could be carried out to address these concerns under a broader Sarnia Area Environmental Health Initiative.”

March 20, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change spoke with Sarnia-area “stakeholders” and the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, gathering feedback on how local chemical and petroleum industries might be affecting the health of people in the community.

Some of the options under consideration for the initiative, Wheeler said, include gauging links between exposures to various compounds in the environment and health risks, understanding available health data while documenting perspectives in the community about “impacts,” and supporting existing work with industry and government partners to enhance how response to leaks and other incidents or emergencies are managed.
