Education programs available for diabetics in Brant, Six Nations – Sachem.ca

Diabetes is one of the most dangerous diseases ailing people in North America. That’s why the Brant Community Healthcare System and De dwa de desy nyes Aboriginal Health Centre have teamed up to deliver Diabetes Education Programs (DEPs) as part of National Diabetes Awareness Month, which is held every November.

“Diabetes is affecting a large number of people with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes,” said Allie Roberts, Diabetes team lead for Brant Community Healthcare System. “We’re trying to talk to as many people as possible. Our goal here is to help people living with diabetes to reach their full-health potential.”

Not only does the program help people with diabetes, it also helps those with pre-diabetes and those who have family members with pre-existing diabetes.

“We’re always looking for ways to encourage a healthy lifestyle, incorporating exercise, diet changes or modification and following up with family doctor and family health team in order to get screening on an annual basis,” Roberts said. “We offer classes and see people with pre-diabetes or are at risk of developing diabetes.”
