Dr. Ekua Agyemang accepts role of Acting Chief Public Health Officer

Iqaluit, Nunavut (May 30, 2024) – Effectively immediately, Dr. Ekua Agyemang will take on the role of Acting Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) of Nunavut to lead the Public Health Branch as it delivers health services to Nunavummiut. Dr. Agyemang joined the department in 2023, as Deputy Chief Public Health Officer, leading public health initiatives. Before moving to Nunavut, Dr. Agyemang practiced in Alberta and Ghana.

Dr. Agyemang will lead a strong team of health care professionals, including several medical officers of health, through this transition. The team remains committed to the health of Nunavummiut and focused on addressing a rise in norovirus cases in Pangnirtung and outbreaks of pertussis, and syphilis; reducing communicable diseases; increasing immunization rates; and eliminating tuberculosis, among others.

Dr. Sean Wachtel has resigned for personal reasons, having served as CPHO since December 2022.

In the coming months, the Department of Health will launch a national search to recruit a permanent CPHO.
