Do Not Consume water advisory for Kugaaruk

Press Release

December 9, 2025

The Department of Health is advising all residents of Kugaaruk not to consume tap water until further notice. This includes boiled water or water filtered through commercially sold filters such as Brita filters, and other systems.

Do not use tap water to mix infant formulas.

The tap water may still be used for the following purposes:

  • Laundry.
  • Cleaning.
  • Showers (avoid swallowing water).

Do Not Consume Advisories are issued when water contains contaminants, that cannot be removed by boiling.

For those who are collecting water from traditional or untreated water sources such as lakes, rivers and streams, it is necessary to continue to boil this water. All water for consumption must be brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of one full minute.

Important Safety Reminder: Do NOT use propane stoves indoors to boil water.
Using propane or other fuel-burning stoves inside can lead to carbon monoxide buildup, which is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.

Safe alternatives for boiling water indoors include:

  • Electric kettle or electric stove (if available)
  • Microwave (heat water in a microwave-safe container until it reaches a rolling boil)

If you must boil water outdoors, ensure the stove is in a well-ventilated area away from doors and windows.

The Department of Health will provide updates as they become available.
