Department of Health working with City of Iqaluit to monitor water quality

Press Release

17 January 2022

The Department of Health is working with the City of Iqaluit to monitor the city’s water quality after residents reported a fuel smell in water last week.

Sampling found trace amounts of fuel at the water treatment plant that were below The  Canadian Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality and considered safe for consumption. Follow up sampling has not detected any fuel in the water. The Department of Health will continue to monitor the water and work with the city as it completes additional steps to reduce the risks of contamination.

Currently there is no evidence that a do not consume order is necessary.

The City of Iqaluit has issued additional direction that can be found on its website, https://www.iqaluit.ca/.

Additional updates will be provided as required.
