Although the federal government’s 2017 budget includes money for First Nations health care and housing, one local chief says she doubts her people will benefit.
Chief Phyllis Williams of Curve Lake First Nation says she’s not holding out hope for federal funding.
She said that’s because the feds have yet to make any progress on the promise they made in the 2016 budget to end boil-water advisories on her reserve.
“I won’t believe it until I see it,” she said of the money announced for First Nations.
The government’s 2017 budget – released Wednesday – includes $225 million over the next decade for off-reserve affordable housing for indigenous people.
It also promises $828 million, over the next five years, for more health resources on reserves.
