COVID-19 Donation Supports Uquutaq Society Men’s Shelter

Press Release

August 27, 2020

The City of Iqaluit is pleased to announce a generous donation from the CMA Foundation (CMAF) that will enable our community to better protect and assist our priority populations that need it the most during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City received $61,500.00 from the Canadian Medical Association Foundation with support from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Council approved the allocation during Motion #20-182 on June 23rd that the funds be given directly to Uquutaq Society Men’s Shelter for their COVID-19 Shelter Response Initiative.

Local governments have been on the frontlines since the beginning of the pandemic and are ideally placed to effectively direct funds to the community. The donation for this project will be used for cleaning supplies, personal protective equipment and implementing enhanced COVID-19 measures at the Uquutaq Society Men’s Shelter.

Uquutaq Society serves a combined average of sixty clients each night, between two programs and facilities (a low barrier, mixed gender shelter that houses up to seventeen individuals nightly, and a high barrier –alcohol and drug free- Men’s shelter). The Men’s Shelter facility is located in a small, converted house, which during inclement weather and the winter months sees at times more than eighty people each night.

We believe strengthening communities is a fundamental part of supporting the health of all Canadians. This pandemic demands that we work together to stop the spread of COVID-19. The City thanks the CMA Foundation, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and Iqalummiut for your ongoing efforts.
