COVID-19 Cases at Water Treatment Construction Site

Press Release

Elkford, B.C.  – Teck is aware of seven COVID-19 cases that have been confirmed involving contractors working on construction of the water treatment plant adjacent to Teck Fording River Operations near Elkford, B.C.

Six of the workers are from Alberta and one is from Vancouver Island; all have now returned to their home communities and are self-isolating with mild or no symptoms. All of the individuals worked only at the construction site and did not work in any areas of the actual Fording River Operations or interact with any Teck operations employees.

All positives cases are members of a night-shift construction crew that worked between August 4 and August 18. Four were staying at the employee lodge in Elkford, three at private accommodations.

12 further tests of workers in close contact have come back negative and 5 results are outstanding.

Teck is working closely with health authorities in British Columbia and Alberta to support efforts to mitigate the risk of any further transmission. We are focused on safeguarding the health and safety of workers and communities and have put in place comprehensive prevention measures across our sites aligned with guidance from public health agencies.
