Committee backs homelessness strategy – StarPhoenix

A Saskatoon city council committee backed spending up to $130,000 annually for the next five years on a plan to end homelessness.

The planning, development and community services committee on Monday approved entering into a contract with the Saskatoon Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) to implement Saskatoon’s homeless action plan.

Coun. Zach Jeffries wondered whether a more aggressive approach to ending homelessness might be warranted, citing the example of Medicine Hat, Alta.

The southern Alberta city of about 60,000 people set a goal in 2009 of eliminating homelessness by 2015 and reportedly met that target by providing housing to homeless people.
