City of Sault Ste. Marie: Every Breakfast Counts 2022 programming launches July 4

Press Release

The Every Breakfast Counts committee is pleased to announce that 2022 programming will begin on July 4 and will run for eight weeks with a target of delivering 850 meals weekly.

Nutritious food items (including fresh fruit/vegetables, milk, cheese and  bread) will be distributed free of charge in conjunction with the Kids Being Kids program offered by the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services and the EarlyON Child and Family Centres, along with at the City outdoor pool locations.

“When we looked into developing Every Breakfast Counts, we quickly realized that our community had the desire, expertise and infrastructure needed to help – what was missing was a structure to organize our resources. I am proud that Every Breakfast Counts has become an important way to provide thousands of children with nutritious meals,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano.

Every Breakfast Counts is seeking donations to support future operations, and anyone interested in making a financial contribution can so through the Algoma Family Services Foundation at: canadahelps.org/en/charities/algoma-family-services-foundation (select Every Breakfast Counts).

“Every Breakfast Counts has had a significant impact since it was launched; however, it wouldn’t be possible with the support of our community,” said Emily Tremblay, Algoma Family Services Community Services Supervisor.

“There are thousands of local students that rely on student nutritional programming provided during the school year, and Every Breakfast Counts addresses a need that is still present in the summer. With the support of the community and through the utilization of the expertise of Algoma Family Services staff, we’re confident we’ll reach even more children this summer.”

Background
Every Breakfast Counts was conceptualized in the spring of 2018 as a means to address a service gap in the community by providing meals to youth who rely on breakfast programming offered during the school year.

Ongoing coordination is facilitated by the Every Breakfast Counts committee, comprised of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Mayor and CAO Offices, District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services, United Way Harvest Algoma, Algoma Family Services, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Indigenous Friendship Centre, Child Care Algoma and EarlyON Child and Family Centre.
