Chiefs in Assembly Pass Resolution to Support First Nations Health Managers Association, Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM) Designation
Ottawa, Ontario July 21, 2015 – The work of building First Nations health management capacity has taken a significant step forward with First Nations Chiefs passing a resolution at the Assembly of First Nations Annual General Assembly in Montreal, Quebec on July 9, 2015 supporting the First Nations Health Managers Association’s (FNHMA’s) Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM) designation.
The resolution was put forward by Grand Chief Mike Mitchell (Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Ontario) and Chief Shining Turtle (Whitefish River First Nation, Ontario) on behalf of FNHMA, a membership-driven organization dedicated to enhancing First Nations health management and capacity. With this resolution, the Chiefs-in Assembly have signaled their support of FNHMA’s CFNHM designation as a preferred credential.
The Chiefs in Assembly request Health Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, to make funding available to First Nations to get adequate training to improve skills and build capacity within First Nation communities.
“Having Certified First Nations Health Managers in our communities assists in supporting the role that we will have in the future of the delivery of our health services.” Notes FNHMA Executive Director, Marion Crowe. “Certifying today contributes to a healthier tomorrow. First Nation health managers are leaders who honour, maintain and uphold our inherent ways of knowing while balancing management principles to bring excellence to our communities and health programs. ”
FNHMA was incorporated in 2010 to provide leadership in health management by promoting quality standards, research, certification and professional developments to expand capacity for members and First Nations. FNHMA is for First Nations, by First Nations. Currently, there are 73 CFNHM’s across Canada and continues to grow.
