Canadian Cancer Society Appoints New President

TORONTO, Aug. 1 – The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to announce the appointment of James (Jimm) R. Simon as president, effective today. Simon, a resident of Stonewall, Manitoba, will provide leadership to the Society’s National Board of Directors, which is composed of volunteers from across Canada.”I’m very excited about contributing to the Society’s work of eradicating cancer and assisting those affected by the disease in my new role,” says Simon. “The Canadian Cancer Society is the trusted voice on cancer in Canada and I want to enhance that reputation during my tenure.”

Ensuring the Society is well positioned to remain competitive in the charitable landscape is also a priority for Simon. “I also will be working to create opportunities to allow Canadians to witness how their contributions make a difference.”

Simon first joined the Society in 2001 as a volunteer for the Manitoba Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. As a Manitoba board member he worked to strengthen communications with stakeholder groups in the province, particularly with First Nation populations. He also served as Manitoba Division President from 2006 to 2008.

An entrepreneur, Simon is owner of, and principal consultant for, Aimm North Heritage Tourism Consulting. His company provides tourism, interpretation and business planning services to public, private and community-based associations across Canada. Simon believes that his considerable experience in working with grassroots groups will serve him well in his new role with the Society.

“Because I’ve lived most of my life in small towns, I have first-hand knowledge of health-care delivery in rural Canada,” says Simon. “I will be bringing this point of view to the national level of the Society. It’s important that all Canadians, no matter where they live, have access to high-quality, timely cancer care, treatment and support. ”
