Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network’s funding to be slashed 70% by 2017 – CBC

Organization expects drastic cut in money received from community action fund

A non-profit group for Indigenous people living with HIV and AIDS will soon have to work with far fewer resources after the federal government slashed its funding by 70 per cent.

Because the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has changed the way it allocates funding under the HIV and Hepatitis C Community Action Fund, the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network’s (CAAN) annual budget will go from $750,000 to just $250,000 in 2017.

Ken Clement, CEO of CAAN, said the cut is a blow to the organization, founded in 1997, which historically has led the way in HIV/AIDS research focused on Indigenous people living with the disease.
