The Canadian Association of Midwives is pleased to release a new position statement on the Canadian Midwifery Model of Care. The position statement was developed in response to a request from jurisdictions where midwifery is still not regulated or not supported and/or where provincial or territorial governments are questioning the fundamental principles of the model such as choice of birth place (home birth in particular) or continuity of care. In many regions, midwives work in different models to meet the specific needs of their communities, particularly in rural and remote areas of the country.

This statement is intended to capture the essence of the midwifery model of care in Canada; it does not describe how all midwives work across Canada.

This position statement has been changed and refined after consultation with all CAM members in the spring and summer of 2015.  We hope this statement serves to highlight the strengths of the Canadian midwifery model of care ans support increased access to midwifery throughout Canada.
