Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week 2012 Launch Event
The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) will be hosting the Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week Launch Event on December 1, 2012 in Winnipeg, Manitoba where the Honourable Theresa Oswald, Minister of Health of Manitoba will be in attendance. The 2012 AAAW will connect national Aboriginal organizations, government partners, health care providers, and community leaders to support this year’s national campaign theme: Getting to Zero. Zero new Infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths.

Getting to ZERO in the Maritimes: Luncheon and Merchandise Bingo Fundraiser
As part of the national Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week (AAAW), Healing Our Nations and the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) will be co-hosting a lunch of Spaghetti and Luski free of charge and will be playing merchandise bingo for $20.00 a card on December 2, 2012 at the Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Centre in Halifax NS. All monies raised during the event will go to the APHA Fund at Healing Our Nations. Regional Chief of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Morley Googoo will speak and do an opening and closing prayer.

Inuit Youth Rock! Protect Your Body, Strengthen Your Community!
Pauktuutit and the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) will be co-hosting a daylong event to highlight youth power in the city of Iqaluit! Fun filled day will start with the signing of the Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Declaration. The team led by Jessica Danforth will then move to the local high school assembly for an interactive presentation on sexual health and youth activism, and the day will end with an exciting night of music, storytelling, and prizes with the launch of Pauktuutit’s Sexual Health Terms Book at the Youth Centre, hosted by emcee Anguti Johnston as Inuk Qablunaaq from Qanurli.

Aboriginal Brothers and Sisters in the Justice System
All Nations Hope and the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) will be co-hosting an event to highlight and bring focus to the overwhelming population of Aboriginal people within the justice system. Pipe Ceremony will take place at noon. Lunch at 1:00pm and words will be shared by national, regional and local Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people concerned about Aboriginal people in the justice system and how it puts them at great risk for HIV and AIDS.

Think Global – Act Local: Indigenous people and HIV and AIDS
Our co-hosts come together to invite Aboriginal organizations, First Nation communities, people living with HIV, front line HIV/AIDS workers and our allies to join them for presentations and discussions about international Indigenous HIV and AIDS issues and how these relate to provincial, regional, and local realities. Focusing on a human rights approach, participants will talk about the scope of HIV work they do locally and the expanding vision of promoting Indigenous specific approaches to the social determinants of health globally to address the continuing legacy of colonization and neo-colonialism. This session is free and open to everyone. Light refreshments served.

Celebrating Aboriginal Women
Red Road HIV/AIDS Network and Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network will partner to host an event on December 5-6, 2012 in Victoria, BC. Red Road HIV/AIDS Network is mobilizing the community to be part of this event, which will have a focus on Aboriginal women. Activities will include speakers from the local, regional and national levels who will speak to Aboriginal women’s issues and share highlights. The event will also feature traditional ceremonies and performances. As a special presentation the local organizers have invited the Visioning Health Arts and Positive Aboriginal Women exhibit. This session is free to attend; lunch and refreshments will be provided.
