Boil Water Advisory – Rankin Inlet

Press Release

The Department of Health is issuing a boil water advisory for the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet. Starting immediately until further notice all residents of Rankin Inlet must boil their water before consumption.

This is a precautionary measure based on low levels of chlorine in the water system due to a mechanical failure at the water treatment plant. The Department of Community and Government Services is addressing the situation.

During a boil water advisory all water for consumption must be brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of one full minute.

It is essential that all water be boiled for the following uses:

  • drinking;
  • preparing infant formulas;
  • preparing juices and ice cubes;
  • washing fruits and vegetables;
  • cooking; or
  • brushing of teeth.

Water can be boiled either in a pot or kettle on a stove or an electric kettle without an automatic shut-off. It is not necessary to boil water used for anything other than the above list.
