Bear Clan Initiates Needle Team – PortageOnline.com

The Portage Bear Clan is broadening its efforts to deal with the safe disposal of needles found in public places.

“Part of Portage Bear Clan’s core values is taking direction from the community and listening to the community,” says Coordinator Manon Timshel. “Since we started our operations in January, we received a few messages from citizens in Portage asking what to do because they found needles in their area — either in their alley or backyard.”

She notes the RCMP were designated to receive those reports, but Portagers wanted to see the Bear Clan involved as well. Timshel says that her leadership committee developed a proposal and produced a safe plan to see a needle team handle help to retrieve needles.

“Right now, we have one member who is outfitted,” adds Timshel. “And we’re just waiting on some more sharps containers, which we have on the way. And some more puncture-resistant gloves, and then we’re hoping to have three or four people. They can each take a week of the month to be on call, as it were.”
