Be Vigilant: MKO warns Indigenous people to take precautions in Winnipeg taxis – Winnipeg Sun

Indigenous leaders are once again urging citizens to be vigilant and to use caution when travelling in Winnipeg taxi cabs, after they say a second concerning incident involving a taxi driver in less than a year left one First Nations woman scared and shaken.

On Feb. 15 around 5 p.m., Loretta Caribou, who was visiting Winnipeg from her home in the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba, called for a cab to get a ride from a private home to a Winnipeg hotel.

But according to a media release put out by the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) the taxi driver drove her for about two blocks, but then suddenly stopped and immediately demanded cash from the woman and threatened to throw her out in the extreme cold if she did not hand it over.
