Press Release
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) advises that the barge delivery to Sachs Harbour has been cancelled for the 2022 sailing season.
A culmination of bad weather and a late start to the season – due to climate change, delayed buoy placement, and flooding in both Inuvik and Hay River – has impacted Marine Transportation Services (MTS) operations. As a result, a decision has been made that it is no longer safe to attempt crossing the Amundsen Gulf.
The GNWT would like to assure residents of Sachs Harbour that MTS and the Fuel Services Division are working to get the necessary fuel into Sachs Harbour. MTS is also developing plans for deck cargo and will be working with the community to prioritize these shipments.
Infrastructure Minister Diane Archie has been in contact with the MLA for Nunakput and the Mayor of Sachs Harbour and will continue to engage with elected leadership to make sure the community and residents have what they need.
The GNWT would like to acknowledge the hard work put in this season by MTS staff and the crewmembers through challenging conditions.
