NATIONAL NETWORK FOR ABORIGINAL MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH

BACKGROUND

The National Network for Aboriginal Mental Health Research (NAMHR) was established in 2001 with CIHR-IAPH support. The NAMHR is committed to building capacity for mental health and addictions research and knowledge translation in remote, rural and urban settings by working in close partnership with Aboriginal organizations and communities. The renewed and expanded NAMHR is funded as one of the IAPH NEAHR programs and has three broad objectives:(1) train new researchers (especially Aboriginal researchers), to develop greater capacity for methodologically sound and culturally responsive mental health and addictions research in Aboriginal communities;
(2) develop research partnerships and collaborations among investigators and Aboriginal communities across Canada to provide opportunities for learning, mentoring, and knowledge production relevant to the needs and priorities of communities, policy makers, and front-line mental health workers;
(3) engage in innovative knowledge translation activities to guide research and apply findings to develop more culturally appropriate and effective mental health policy, promotion, and intervention for Aboriginal populations and communities.
