AMC Urges First Nations Healthcare Prioritization in $1.2B Deal, Calls for Enhanced Health Sector Opportunities

Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) emphasizes the critical need to prioritize First Nations healthcare services considering the recent signing of a $1.2 billion healthcare agreement between the federal and provincial governments.

“The federal and provincial governments have to commit to creating greater accessibility to education and employment opportunities within the healthcare sector for First Nations as the money is rolled out and a three-year action plan is developed,” AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick said. “First Nations have a right to health, which is too often interrupted by barriers we did not create. I expect the AMC to be an active participant in the development of this three-year provincial action plan as the province receives these funds.”

The AMC maintains that removing these barriers is essential to fostering diversity and representation within the healthcare sector. This includes addressing challenges experienced by students pursuing healthcare careers as well as streamlining licensing processes to facilitate the entry of First Nations and Manitobans into the healthcare workforce.

“Uplifting First Nations perspectives and fostering culturally sensitive healthcare practices are essential to achieving equitable healthcare outcomes for First Nations people,” continued Grand Chief Merrick. “The AMC is committed to working collaboratively alongside the province to improve best practices through a First Nations lens to eliminate racism and discrimination.”

The AMC anticipates consultation and active involvement from the province – asserting that through endorsing culturally sensitive health initiatives, the province can empower First Nations to address their healthcare needs while ensuring their perspectives are acknowledged, accommodated, and respected.
