A good percentage of the federal cabinet fanned out over Canada Easter Monday to announce a new National School Food Program. In Hamilton, local Minister Filomena Tassi was joined by GTAH ministers Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business. The plan will see $1 billion over five years go to school nutrition. A government news release says the program will launch with a target of providing meals to 400,000 more kids every year, beyond those served by existing school food programs. It doesn’t say how the funding will be targeted to reach those not receiving school nutrition now
The program will reach First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities as well as Self-Governing and Modern Treaty partners, many of whom have some of the highest rates of food insecurity in Canada.
