AFN National Chief Congratulates FSIN and Governments for MOU on Health

OTTAWA, Aug. 21 – Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine congratulated the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) and the governments of Saskatchewan and Canada on the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve First Nations health in Saskatchewan.”I am very pleased with the approach the three governments have demonstrated in dealing with the issue of health in Saskatchewan. FSIN has played a key role in bringing forward the concerns and issues of First Nations in that province. This MOU will help close the gap in health care for First Nations, give more control to First Nations while recognizing the treaty relationship and will also promote the participation of First Nations in the health care profession,” National Chief Phil Fontaine noted. “Health care is a significant concern for First Nation citizens and this type of agreement will hopefully address some of the outstanding concerns about health programs and services as well as emphasize the importance of the use of traditional medicines for First Nations.”

The MOU was signed on August 19th in Fort Qu’Appelle Saskatchewan and will establish a formal partnership of the three parties.

This approach to partnership is what was envisioned in the AFN – Health Canada Tripartite Policy Framework which noted the importance of planning, partnership and support of First Nations in the design and delivery of programs and services to First Nation communities.

The Assembly of First Nations is the national organization representing First Nations citizens in Canada.
