Labrador’s Indigenous groups “distrust” social workers

There’s a sore relationship among social workers and Indigenous peoples in Newfoundland and Labrador according to one of the main contributors to a new set of industry standards around cultural sensitivity.

“Our history is just so full of examples of people coming in, some maybe with good intentions, some not,” Gwen Watts, an Inuk woman and social worker based in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, told CBC’s Labrador Morning.

“People respond to a social worker as a part of a system, not as maybe a lovely, friendly person that they are just meeting but ‘this is someone from a system that has collectively hurt us.’”
