Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada
Welcomes new Federal Cabinet
Ottawa. The Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada (A.N.A.C.) is pleased to welcome the new Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau and his diverse Cabinet Ministers into a new era in Indigenous relations. A.N.A.C. welcomes “Real Change”.
“For over 40 years, the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada has been working toward improving the health outcomes of Indigenous people in Canada. It was an honor to see the presence of Indigenous traditions at the swearing in ceremony as well as the presence of two Indigenous Ministers” says Lisa Bourque Bearskin, President of A.N.A.C.
Indigenous people in Canada continue to experience poorer health outcomes and in recent years, there have been national Indigenous health organizations that have closed their doors due to funding losses. A.N.A.C continues to work actively to influence public policy so that federal, provincial and territorial responses reflect the current needs of Indigenous communities
Without fully knowing how the new federal government will respond to these pressing issues, the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada remains hopeful that a new era of Indigenous-Federal government relations is unfolding. “It is also very heartwarming to see gender equity among the new cabinet, as females make up half of the Indigenous population as well, and can bring a change in style to governance” adds Lisa Bourque Bearskin.
A.N.A.C. will be hosting a national training forum in Montreal, February 15-17, 2016, among the topics to be discussed are northern and remote communities nursing issues, in response to recent Auditor General Reports showing there are ongoing issues that need to be addressed.
