Tuesday, June 21, 2016 is National Aboriginal Day, a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada. The day was first celebrated in 1996. Since 2011, the week leading up to National Aboriginal Day is known locally as Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary (AAWC). AAWC’s theme for 2016 is “Keeping the Circle Strong” – “Courage of Picking up the Feather – “Celebrating our Children, Youth and Young Adults.”
The Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary website lists the community events taking place in and around Calgary during the week of Awareness.
