Travel checkpoints divide Islanders; First Nations seek voice with municipal leaders
MANITOULIN ISLAND — In light of the controversy sparked by complaints about First Nations border closures on Manitoulin Island, the United Chiefs and Councils of Mnidoo Mnising want to “set a new tone.”
On May 1, the organization penned a letter to the secretary-treasurer of the Manitoulin Municipal Association, proposing the creation of a standing crisis committee composed of Indigenous and non-Indigenous leadership.
The COVID-19 Leadership Coordination Committee would facilitate communications between the Island’s First Nations and municipalities to address the public health threat facing the Island as a whole.
The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service has agreed to provide operational support.
